Voters decide control of the U.S. House and Senate in the midterm elections on Nov. 3, with Republicans defending slim majorities in both chambers. Fox News’ final Power Rankings rate the Senate a toss-up and point to Democrats retaking the House.
Voters will choose control of the U.S. House and Senate on Nov. 3, with Republicans defending narrow majorities, according to Fox News.
Republicans hold the Senate 53-47. Fox News’ final Power Rankings rate the fight for control a toss-up. The GOP needs 50 seats to keep the chamber because Vice President JD Vance casts tie-breaking votes, the report said.
The forecast puts Alaska, Iowa, Maine, South Carolina and Texas, all GOP-held, in the toss-up column. Michigan is the one Democratic-held toss-up.
In the House, the rankings point to Democrats retaking control. The forecast says a strong Democratic night could yield as many as 240 of 435 seats. A strong Republican night could yield 212 seats, which Fox said is six short of a majority.
According to Fox, the Republican Party is operating in a difficult environment. He pointed to stubborn inflation, which he linked partly to a war with Iran that polls indicate is unpopular, along with Trump’s approval ratings, which have been trending increasingly negative.
President Donald Trump has predicted Republicans will hold both chambers. He claimed that if Democrats win control, “this country will go to hell.”
Governorships in 36 states are also on the ballot, and Fox reported that 26 governors are Republicans and 24 are Democrats. Voters will weigh in on 145 statewide ballot measures.
The first polls close at 6 p.m. ET in parts of Kentucky and Indiana. The last close at 1 a.m. ET in parts of Alaska.
The forecasts are projections, not results. The outcome of the election is not yet known.
